The white man had burned their land, raped their women, and slaughtered their children. He had made them a nation of slaves, and those he could not enslave, he promised to destroy. The Apache had one hope: vengeance.Out of the scattered remnants of the Apache tribes rose a man whose cunning, ferocity, and genuis for warfare would make him their leader in a last tragic struggle for survival. The Apache gave him their arms, their strength, and their absolute devotion. The white man gave him his name: Geronimo!. [KEY WORDS: North America U.S.A. 20069 JESSETT, THOMAS E THE INDIAN SIDE OF THE WHITMAN MASSACRE . &&&&& LIII p.,full-page illus. 1973 Washington : Ye Galleon Press SOFTCOVER: (Orig. cream card covered sewn booklet with red and black titles. VERY GOOD) The author attempts to present the Cayuse Indian position in the late autumn of 1847, describing a fictional interview between a Cayuse Indian, Tiloukaikt and his imaginary white trapper friend. Although the interview is fiction, the author very carefully documents his material, giving sources for his information. The portraits of Tomahas and Tiloukaikt - the men responsible for the murder of Dr. Whitman - are from sketches made by Paul Kane in 1847, a Canadian artist who was travelling overland from Fort Vancouver to Eastern Canada. The background story of the Cayuse and Marcus Whitman, a man who did not get along too well even with his fellow missionaries! The Tragedy at Waiilaptu was but a minor incident in the history of Old Oregon county, but it forced a dilatory U.S. government to proved a territorial government for the area. The story became a legend. A very interesting sidelight on the massacre. [KEY WORDS: North America Ethnography Anthropology North American Indians Cultural history art war] € 17.50

GOOD Basil Johnston (1929-2015) was a linguist and lecturer in the Department of Ethnology at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.Rarely accessible to the general public, Ojibway mythology is as rich in meaning, as broad, as deep, and as innately appealing as the mythologies of Greece, Rome, and other Western civilizations. In Ojibway Heritage Basil Johnston introduces his people's ceremonies, rituals, songs, dances, prayers, arid legends. Conveying the sense of wonder and mystery at the heart of the Ojibway experience, Johnston describes the creation of the universe, followed by that of plants and animals and human beings, and the paths taken by the latter. These stories are to be read, enjoyed, and freely interpreted. Their authorship is perhaps most properly attributed to the tribal storytellers who have carried on the oral tradition that Johnston records and preserves in this ook.Rarely accessible to the general public, Ojibway mythology is as rich in meaning, as broad, as deep, and as innately appealing as the mythologies of Greece, Rome, and other Western civilizations. XXII + 274 p.and 32 pages of plates with b/w photogr., index 1988 University of Nebraska Press SOFTCOVER: Orig. paperback. Tiny number on title page. VERY GOOD) Well remembered as a star of Western films in the 1920s and 1930s, Tim McCoy was also a working cowboy and rancher, a U.S. Cavalry officer and adjutant general of Wyoming, a performer in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and head of a traveling Wild West show. Because of his adoptive ties to the Arapaho Indians and his intimate knowledge of their ways, he was sought out in 1922 as a technical adviser for the epic film The Covered Wagon. Soon he was in front of the camera as MGM's answer to Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson. His wide-ranging autobiography reveals a gentleman and a gift for telling stories and for making friends with the famous and the obscure. 11216 MCNICHOLS, CHARLES LONGSTRETH Crazy Weather. 1st Edition. First printing. 195 p. 1944 New York : The MacMillan Company HARDCOVER: (Orig. cloth copy in FINE condition with GOOD dustjacket) A novel set in four days, around 1900, along the banks of the Colorado River. It's the end of August when noon temperatures soared above 110; truly crazy weather. South Boy (named by his Hupa nurse; he had been born down-river), a fourteen year old white boy with unkept tangled locks, assesses the meaning of life. It was certain that being responsible meant "taking on disagreable jobs no on else wanted", and, at the current rate of events, time to fish would soon be gone. It was also clear that his Indian friends, "unfaced with distressing alternatives" were all happy people. So it was, South Boy quit ranch life to take off with his Mojave friend, Havek. A splendid story of two boys on the brink of manhood, each with a foot in eachother's culture, both of which master storyteller Charles McNichols understood well. XXI + 282 p., b/w photographs on plates 1973 Macmillan SOFTCOVER: (Orig. paperb with pictorial covers Small number stamp on first end paper.. VERY GOOD) / AS NEW) RARE EDITION. Grey Owl (1888-1938), an Englishman, immigrated to Canada as Archibald Belaney in 1906 and quickly constructed an identity as a Native, assuming the Ojibwa name Wa-sha-quon-asin and eventually settling in Saskatchewan on Ajawaan Lake. He spread his message of preservation through multiple bestsellers, including The Men of the Last Frontier, The Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People, and Tales of an Empty Cabin. First published in 1935, Pilgrims of the Wild is Grey Owl's autobiographical account of his transition from successful trapper to preservationist. With his Iroquois wife, Anahereo, Grey Owl set out to protect the environment and the endangered beaver. Powerful in its simplicity, Pilgrims of the Wild tells the story of Grey Owl's life of happy cohabitation with the wild creatures of nature and the healing powers of what he referred to as "the great Northland" of "Over the Hills and Far Away." A bestseller at the time, Pilgrims of the Wild helped establish Grey Owl's international reputation as a conservationist. His legacy of warnings against the degradations of nature and the dangers of industry live on, despite the posthumous revelation that he wasn't, in fact, the First Nations man he claimed to be. On pages 75 and 88 small underlining. VERY GOOD) RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER The Native American Book of Knowledge The Circle of Life is an American Indian symbol for the Four Directions. The four colors represent the four stages of life, from childhood to old age; the cycle of seasons, from spring to winter; and the four races of people. Each of the Four Directions symbolizes a certain power. In this circle, East is knowledge, South is life, West is the power of change, and North is wisdom. The Native American Book of Knowledge reveals the true history of the American Indian people. ''We Have Always Been Here'' tells of the origins of the People based on their own accounts, scientific theories, and archaeological evidence; and ''Poets, Prophets, and Peacemakers Before Columbus'' introduces the Native American supernatural and cultural heroes of the past. From the creative inspiration of Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs to the political genius of the Iroquois peacemaker Deganawida, readers will discover the impact these mystical heroes had on our world today.
