This book is an illustrated edition of Black Elk's account of the seven sacred rites of the Oglala Sioux. Vividly portraying the arrival of the White Buffalo Woman on the Plains, the paintings and charcoals by Vera Louise Drysdale highlight dramatic elements of the ancient rituals she imparted, and they show everyday objects that were sanctified in the Sioux cosmology. The sacred pipe is the central instrument in the holy rites of the Sioux people. The White Buffalo Woman appeared on the Plains to give the pipe to the Sioux so that they might "send their voices" to Wakan-Tanka, the Great Spirit. She related the seven rites of the pipe: the keeping of the soul, the rite of purification, crying for a vision, the Sun Dance, the making of relatives, preparation for womanhood, and the throwing of the ball that symbolizes the earth and gives strength to future generations. VERY GOOD) The author attempts to present the Cayuse Indian position in the late autumn of 1847, describing a fictional interview between a Cayuse Indian, Tiloukaikt and his imaginary white trapper friend. Although the interview is fiction, the author very carefully documents his material, giving sources for his information. The portraits of Tomahas and Tiloukaikt - the men responsible for the murder of Dr. Whitman - are from sketches made by Paul Kane in 1847, a Canadian artist who was travelling overland from Fort Vancouver to Eastern Canada. The background story of the Cayuse and Marcus Whitman, a man who did not get along too well even with his fellow missionaries! The Tragedy at Waiilaptu was but a minor incident in the history of Old Oregon county, but it forced a dilatory U.S. government to proved a territorial government for the area. The story became a legend. A very interesting sidelight on the massacre. [KEY WORDS: North America Ethnography Anthropology North American Indians Cultural history art war] 17.50

20019 JOHNSTON, BASIL Ojibway Heritage.Tthe ceremonies, rituals, songs, dances, prayers and legends of the Ojibway .. 171 p., 1988 McClelland & Stewart, SOFTCOVER: Orig. paperback Name on first endpaper. GOOD Basil Johnston (1929-2015) was a linguist and lecturer in the Department of Ethnology at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.Rarely accessible to the general public, Ojibway mythology is as rich in meaning, as broad, as deep, and as innately appealing as the mythologies of Greece, Rome, and other Western civilizations. In Ojibway Heritage Basil Johnston introduces his people's ceremonies, rituals, songs, dances, prayers, arid legends. Conveying the sense of wonder and mystery at the heart of the Ojibway experience, Johnston describes the creation of the universe, followed by that of plants and animals and human beings, and the paths taken by the latter. These stories are to be read, enjoyed, and freely interpreted. Their authorship is perhaps most properly attributed to the tribal storytellers who have carried on the oral tradition that Johnston records and preserves in this ook.Rarely accessible to the general public, Ojibway mythology is as rich in meaning, as broad, as deep, and as innately appealing as the mythologies of Greece, Rome, and other Western civilizations. XXII + 274 p.and 32 pages of plates with b/w photogr., index 1988 University of Nebraska Press SOFTCOVER: Orig. paperback. Tiny number on title page. VERY GOOD) Well remembered as a star of Western films in the 1920s and 1930s, Tim McCoy was also a working cowboy and rancher, a U.S. Cavalry officer and adjutant general of Wyoming, a performer in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and head of a traveling Wild West show. Because of his adoptive ties to the Arapaho Indians and his intimate knowledge of their ways, he was sought out in 1922 as a technical adviser for the epic film The Covered Wagon. Soon he was in front of the camera as MGM's answer to Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson. His wide-ranging autobiography reveals a gentleman and a gift for telling stories and for making friends with the famous and the obscure. In a new preface, Ronald McCoy provides a moving account of his father's last years, when they collaborated in the writing of Tim McCoy Remembers the West. 20028 WA-SHA-QUON-ASIN [GREY OWL]. Pilgrims of the wild : Grey Owl, His Classic Autobiography Reprint of 1935. . XXI + 282 p., b/w photographs on plates 1973 Macmillan SOFTCOVER: (Orig. paperb with pictorial covers Small number stamp on first end paper.. VERY GOOD) / AS NEW) RARE EDITION. Grey Owl (1888-1938), an Englishman, immigrated to Canada as Archibald Belaney in 1906 and quickly constructed an identity as a Native, assuming the Ojibwa name Wa-sha-quon-asin and eventually settling in Saskatchewan on Ajawaan Lake. He spread his message of preservation through multiple bestsellers, including The Men of the Last Frontier, The Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People, and Tales of an Empty Cabin. First published in 1935, Pilgrims of the Wild is Grey Owl's autobiographical account of his transition from successful trapper to preservationist. With his Iroquois wife, Anahereo, Grey Owl set out to protect the environment and the endangered beaver. Powerful in its simplicity, Pilgrims of the Wild tells the story of Grey Owl's life of happy cohabitation with the wild creatures of nature and the healing powers of what he referred to as "the great Northland" of "Over the Hills and Far Away." A bestseller at the time, Pilgrims of the Wild helped establish Grey Owl's international reputation as a conservationist. His legacy of warnings against the degradations of nature and the dangers of industry live on, despite the posthumous revelation that he wasn't, in fact, the First Nations man he claimed to be. 20045 WHITE DEER OF AUTUMN' The Native American Book of Knowledge (Native People Native Ways Series, Vol 1). 88 p.drawings,, bibliogr. 1992 Beyond Words Publishing SOFTCOVER: Orig. paperback. On pages 75 and 88 small underlining. VERY GOOD) RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER The Native American Book of Knowledge The Circle of Life is an American Indian symbol for the Four Directions. The four colors represent the four stages of life, from childhood to old age; the cycle of seasons, from spring to winter; and the four races of people. Each of the Four Directions symbolizes a certain power. In this circle, East is knowledge, South is life, West is the power of change, and North is wisdom. The Native American Book of Knowledge reveals the true history of the American Indian people. ''We Have Always Been Here'' tells of the origins of the People based on their own accounts, scientific theories, and archaeological evidence; and ''Poets, Prophets, and Peacemakers Before Columbus'' introduces the Native American supernatural and cultural heroes of the past. From the creative inspiration of Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs to the political genius of the Iroquois peacemaker Deganawida, readers will discover the impact these mystical heroes had on our world today.
