Hij was een succesvolle zakenman die plantages bezat in Guyana. Alexandrine erfde een groot vermogen van 33.000 pond, wat in die tijd enorm veel geld was. Haar moeder, Henriëtte Marie Louise van Capellen, was hofdame bij koningin Sophie, de vrouw van koning Willem III.Alexandrine en haar moeder hadden een grote drang naar vrijheid en avontuur. Samen reisden ze naar Afrika in het midden van de 19e eeuw. Ze waren niet bang om risico's te nemen en trokken naar het gebied van de Nijl. Hun avontuurlijke reizen waren zeer ongewoon voor vrouwen uit die tijd. Ze wilden nieuwe landen en volkeren verkennen en genieten van hun vrijheid. VERY GOOD AS NEW) The life of a soldier in the first decade of the twentieth century, before the Great War. Frank Richards is well known for his Old Soldiers Never Die, probably the best account of the Great War as seen through the eyes of a private soldier. Richards served in the trenches from August 1914 to the end in the 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers (RWF). Born in 1884 he enlisted in the RWF at Brecon in April 1901, just three months after the death of Queen Victoria. Brecon was the home of the South Wales Borderers (SWB) and the recruiting sergeant there did his best to persuade the new recruit to join the SWB (Rorkeâ s Drift and all that) but all in vain. What attracted Richards to the RWF was the fact that they had a battalion in China and another in S Africa, and they were the only regiment in the Army privileged to wear the flash - a smart bunch of five black ribbons sewn in a fan shape on the back of the tunic collar. This was a reminder of the days when soldiers wore their hair long, tied at the back in a queue or pig-tail.This is a marvellous book, full of nostalgia as it takes you back to the days of the Empire before the outbreak of the Great War, to that great little army that died on the Western front in 1914; it is in fact a prequel to Old Soldiers Never Die. Richards served in India and in Burma and his descriptions of the soldierâ s life in those countries in those far off days and his anecdotes make wonderful reading. Kipling described east of Suez as â the place where there ainâ t no ten commandmentsâ . For the soldier the prime virtues were courage, honesty, loyalty to friends and a pride in the regiment. In his inimitable style Richards is down to earth though never having to use the four-letter language that is de rigueur today nor was the soldiersâ attitude to the natives very politically correct. As one of his fellow reservists said when they mobilised for war in August 1914: â Thereâ s only one way to treat foreigners from Hong Kong to France, and that is to knock hell out of them.â Some of his yarns are for the broad minded - witness the â magnificently builtâ prostitute who chose the date of the Delhi Durbar of 1903 to announce her forthcoming retirement. To celebrate the occasion and as an act of loyalty to the Crown she decided on her final appearance to make herself freely available to all soldiers between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. with preference given to old customers; a notice to this effect was pinned on her door. But life in the army wasnâ t all bad; Richards served eight years with the colours, nearly all of them in India and Burma, and in those eight years he grew three inches in height and put on three stone in weight. Bekannt wurde er nach der Belagerung von Tsingtau als der Flieger von Tsingtau und als Flugpionier in. Plüschow trat am 6. April 1904 als Seekadett in die Kaiserliche Marine ein. Anfang 1914 erhielt er eine Flugzeugführerausbildung auf dem Flugplatz Johannisthal bei Berlin und fungierte dann als Seeflieger. Am 27. November 1927 reiste Gunther Plüschow mit seinem eigens dafür gebauten Expeditionskutter Feuerland von Büsum nach Punta Arenas in Chile. Die Reise führte über Teneriffa, Bahía, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo und Buenos Aires. Gleichzeitig beförderte der Dampfer Planet von der Reederei Laeisz mit dem von der Firma Askania gekommenen Ingenieur Ernst Dreblow sein Wasserflugzeug Heinkel HD 24 W mit der Kennung "D-1313" nach Chile, wo Plüschow es in Punta Arenas übernehmen und zusammen mit Dreblow aufrüsten konnte. Bis Dezember 1928 bauten Plüschow und Dreblow auf dem Gelände der Werft von Braun y Blanchard in Punta Arenas den bis dahin in Kisten verpackten Heinkel-Doppeldecker von Typ HD 24 W erfolgreich zusammen. Der erste große Flug ging in das argentinische Ushuaia. Mit an Bord war ein Postsack, die erste Luftpost von Punta Arenas nach Ushuaia. In den folgenden Monaten überflogen Plüschow und Dreblow als erste Menschen die Darwin-Kordillere auf der großen Feuerlandinsel, das Kap Hoorn und die Torres del Paine in Patagonien. Sie waren fasziniert von der überwältigenden Schönheit des patagonischen Inlandeises und brachten von ihren Flügen, oft unter Lebensgefahr, zum ersten Mal Fotos und Filmmaterial von diesen bis dahin unerforschten Gegenden Südamerikas mit. Etwa acht Monate blieb Plüschow im südlichsten Teil Südamerikas. Im Juli 1929 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und veröffentlichte sein Buch "Silberkondor über Feuerland" und einen gleichnamigen Dokumentarfilm dazu. An unrestrained attack on Vespucci and his claimed discoveries.Amerigo Vespucci was a moneychanger from the Florentine banking House of Medici. Banking was considered the lowest profession because of the unseemly practice of money lending at interest or usury. Vespucci is derived from the Italian word for WASP -a nasty stinging insect. Vespucci arrived in Seville, Spain in 1491 and worked as a clerk for the banking firm of Juanoto Beraldi, branch office of the Medici banking House in Florence. He is never heard of again in any of the historical records until 1503 when he wrote a letter to his boss in Florence and called the newly discovered lands a MUNDUS NOVUS or NEW WORLD. In this Mundus Novus letter, Vespucci claimed to have made 4 voyages to this New World. It is not very hard to PROVE that the so-called voyages were a total fantasy and mere fiction. Vespucci stole John Cabot's geographical information of his 4th and last voyage in 1498.
